When I open CLS_xyvision/GRP_system/JOB_keyboards/DIV_ua, on the “X” key I see 2 circumflex accents. One on the lower case “x” and one on the upper case “X”. The upper case version would be used for in practice with u/c letters and l/c letters with ascenders. But if I try to use the PI character string for the u/c version in a division, I do not see the accent, unless I follow the PI character with a <key> macro, which is what the DIV_ua is doing. So I must have something messed up in the keyboard mapping table?? I am very confused.

I don’t think the macro has anything to do with your problem.
The macro is just used in the keyboard division to put the character
in the center of its box and to go the next line, select a smaller typeface.
The more probable cause is that the font you are using does not contain an
upppercase floating accent characer.
So check the FAST in question and check if it contains the character in
question (since you did not give us any information on what release you are
running and since pre XPP 8 and post XPP 8 are very different, it is
impossible to give you more precise directions)
